All park trails are closed to pets with the exception of the Mill Creek (trailhead is at the Pruitt river access area in the Upper District) and all three Buffalo Point Campground trails (Forest Trail, Overlook Trail, and Campground Trail in the Lower District).

Pets are allowed in all campgrounds, on the river, and on the gravel bars, but must be under physical control at all times.

Pets are not allowed in any government buildings, caves, on most park trails, or within designated wilderness areas with the exception of gravel bars along the river corridor.

National Parks

Unlike Australia, pets are welcome in National Parks in America

Cats are welcome:

  • in developed areas

  • on many trails and campgrounds

  • in some lodging facilities

Cats must be restrained, either on a leash (not exceeding 6 feet in length) or caged/crated.

Pets are not permitted:

  • in public buildings

  • public transport

  • designated swimming beaches

National Forests

Cats are allowed in national forests, but must be kept on leash (less than 6 feet in length) while in developed recreation areas and interpretive trails.

Cats are not permitted in swimming areas.
