Pets on a leash are allowed in some areas of Gateway National Recreation Area, including on bay-side beaches at Plum Island and Horseshoe Cove throughout the year.

Pets are not permitted at

  • all campgrounds

  • ocean-side beaches at Sandy Hook Unit from March 15 through Labor Day (piping plover season)

  • swimming beaches at Staten Island Unit's Great Kills Park from Memorial Day through Labor Day

  • Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden and Breezy Point Tip (all within Jamaica Bay Unit) between March 15 and September 15 (piping plover season)

  • any part of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at any time of year

Typically pets are not permitted in public buildings.

National Parks

Unlike Australia, pets are welcome in National Parks in America

Cats are welcome:

  • in developed areas

  • on many trails and campgrounds

  • in some lodging facilities

Cats must be restrained, either on a leash (not exceeding 6 feet in length) or caged/crated.

Pets are not permitted:

  • in public buildings

  • public transport

  • designated swimming beaches

National Forests

Cats are allowed in national forests, but must be kept on leash (less than 6 feet in length) while in developed recreation areas and interpretive trails.

Cats are not permitted in swimming areas.
