Spartacus

Spartacus loves following his Mom everywhere and fishing with his family.

@spartacusthesavannahcat

What is Spartacus' favourite thing to do?

Spartacus loves to climb trees, hike all day around the lake and go fishing with Mom and dad on the boat!

What is Spartacus' favourite food?

Spartacus loves shrimp but only gets it as a treat.

He is currently on a raw and whole prey diet low in purines as he has a genetic liver disorder rare in cats which requires surgery every 24 -45 months. He is not a candidate for a liver shunt and diet alone won’t prevent bi urate stones from developing.

What is Spartacus' favourite toy?

His favourite toy is a pink flamingo which he has played catch with since he was a kitten.

What kind of adventures does Spartacus like to go on?

We hike daily through trails in the forest and around the lake. We also go fishing on the boat whenever time permits.

Tell us about your most memorable adventure.

One day we went hiking and came across a fox. Spartacus chases the fox while mommy chased him to grab his leash. Mommy broke her foot while chasing Spartacus. He was on a harness and 2 leash lengths but mommy wasn’t holding leash as Spartacus usually sticks to the trails.

We also came across an otter. Fearless Spartacus attacked the otter and mommy had to get in between them to separate them. Otters were more careful after that encounter. Spartacus also chased a porcupine.

Spartacus loves to chase prey but never hurts them.

Why did you decide to train Spartacus?

Spartacus is an F3 Savannah and looks like a wild cat but has the disposition of a lovable dog! He prefers to go outside to pee and poo just like a dog.

We bought him a harness when he was a couple of months old. He took to it right away. He loves the outdoors!

How did you train Spartacus?

We didn’t really have to train Spartacus. He just follows mommy everywhere like a dog.

What has been the most rewarding part of having a catexplorer?

We get to enjoy the great outdoors as a family and that is the most rewarding part of having a catexplorer.

What has been the hardest?

The hardest part of being a catexplorer is constantly keeping Spartacus from chasing big prey.

@spartacusthesavannahcat

We love nature and don’t want the wild animals to get hurt or Spartacus to get hurt.

We also have a lot of snapping turtles so we don’t want him to get to close to these magnificent creatures.

In hindsight, what would you do differently?

Absolutely nothing! Hiking and boating provides so much stimulation and exercise which is good for everyone!

Spartacus is so tired out by the end of the day, he sleeps in bed with us all night long!

What advice would you give other humans training their catexplorers?

Most important advice I can give for training a cat to be an adventurous cat explorer is to purchase a comfortable, secure walking jacket that is easy to take on and off and won’t easily get caught in branches of trees.

Present kitty with the harness at the front door. Ask if he wants out and if he shows interest then put his jacket on and carry him outside and set him down.

From there take it slow and let kitty get used to his surroundings. For those kitties that are motivated by food, bring healthy treats along. (Preferably freeze dried treats with only 1 ingredients.)

If kitty is play motivated by toys, bring a toy wand along.
